Cecile Thaxter, Vice President of Environment and Community Affairs at Rio Tinto, told visitors that an internal review of the incident is underway and any lessons learned will be applied in the future.
She said: "This is the first time we have encountered this type of interference in more than 1800 controlled explosions that have occurred over the past three years."
In May 2020, the sacred site at Juukan Gorge, with a history of 46,000 years, was destroyed, leading to the resignation of Jean-Sebastien Jacques, CEO of Rio Tinto, and Chris Salisbury, head of the iron ore division. In the months that followed, major investors have been in revolt.
Since the Juukan Gorge incident, Rio Tinto has introduced procedures to protect indigenous cultural heritage, including placing vibration monitors near the site within a 350-meter radius of explosions and taking photographs before and after the explosions.
An independent audit report on Rio Tinto's global cultural heritage management released in March this year found that Rio Tinto is leading in some areas but also highlighted areas that need improvement.
